Color Me Red Kennels

Canadian Malamutes: Alaskan Malmutes

The Alaskan Malamutes is and has been our children, our life.

They each have their turn in coming camping with us, long extended walks  They are taken either one or  two at a time carting/sledding depending on weather.

When a female is due to have a litter, two weeks prior to her due date, she is moved into the whelping room, built as an addition to our home. A baby monitor is added to hear her every sound.

When the litter of pups is born, we have round the clock supervision for the first two weeks until their eyes open.

During the period of growing, the pups are introduced to our two cats. At the age of 5 weeks, depending on the weather, mother and pups are moved into the main yard, starts socializing in between the fences with adult dogs.

When introduced AS A PUP IN A HOME, they are very good with small animals and children. They grow with the family.

If the pup does not turn out the way the owner wants him/her to be....do not blame the pup, blame the owner. The owner allows the pup to get away with behaviour which is considered cute, which at a later age, is not.

Their ears are very sensitive, therefore police sirens, ambulance, coyotes, shrills, screams from children are very ear piercing to them

Therefore they will re-act to the noise, eventually start howling. Their re-action to shrills and screams are very hard for them to tolerate.

This is one of the reason why I insist a questionnaire is required to be filled out.

To make sure this type of dog is for your kind of family.

It is of the utmost important that a potential owner HAS TO HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THIS BREED.

They are a ponderous dog, well built, solid body, wide head, proud expression, ears upright, eyes small, almond shape, like those of a wolf but with a sweet expression.

Its coat is very thick, legs, muzzle is almost always white. Its tail waves over its back.

Strong willed, stubborn, friendly disposition, active, needs to be exercised, sweetly affectionate. They strive for attention. They use their intelligence to establish relationships with people. Wonderful companion, people oriented, best buddy dog, highly intelligent but very stubborn, reward system weakens the stubborness.

Likes to be the center of attention Even tempered animal, has character, a loyal gentle people loving dog..

They are NOT recognized as a guard dog, their size makes them an effective visual deterrent. The "GENTLE GIANT" size is intimidating to people, that alone should deter the intruder. They usually do not bark. They have a beautiful howl, which often is referred to as "THE CALL OF THE WILD" Hardy, durable breed, capable of enduring extreme cold, able to deal quite well with the heat, if given shade. If they are given love, attention, these dogs will be friends and companions for life.

All our present dogs are registered. Each of our dogs has their own individual chain link pen 40 x 40 x 6 feet high. Attached is a fenced play-in yard. Our malamutes are not allowed to run loose. They are NOT kennel bred, they are home bred. They are sound in body & mind, full of vitality.

THEY VARY IN SIZE, WEIGHT. Larger size over 100 pounds are considered to be in the "Gentle Giants" catagory.

Over 100 pounds, I starting planning  to have them are hip certified, after two years old.

These type of dogs do make a person a great pet for home, acreage. walking, hiking, packing, skijoring, carting or sledding.
